Inspired by a landscape that reminded him of his beloved Scotland, explorer and squatter Angus McMillan was so moved by his first view of eastern Victoria from Mount Macleod in 1839, that he ‘…named it at the moment Caledonia Australis’. Caledonia, an old name for Scotland, and Australis, meaning southern is the region now known as Gippsland. Today certain privileged vineyard sites around the Gippsland town of Leongatha are proving to have the terroir essential for producing high quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Caledonia Australis 2005 Chardonnay awarded best chardonnay and best white wine at the 2008 Gippsland Wine Show. Medals won by Caledonia Australis at the Gippsland Wine Show. 2005 Caledonia Australis Chardonnay: Gold Medal Trophy Winner. 2005 Mount Macleod Chardonnay: Silver Medal. 2005 Caledonia Australis Pinot Noir: Silver Medal (and just 2 points behind the Best of Show). 2008 Vintage update from Wine maker Martin Williams. "On the eve of Vintage 2008, it’s all systems go for what promises to be a very short and busy harvest. Buckets and bins are sparkling clean, vintage equipment is all serviced and as I write, bird nets are being removed from various Chardonnay and Pinot blocks in the Notman vineyard. After a winter, spring and early summer that effectively saw a break in the 2-year drought, with almost average rainfall in Leongatha and prevailing overcast and windy conditions up until February, we are seeing the vines respond strongly to this hot and sunny March. It’s as if the brakes have been released and the grapes are hurtling headlong towards ripeness. It’s all we can do now to keep up with them, but with luck and good management we’ll have the harvest all but complete over the coming 10 days. The vines have been in very good health throughout the season; humidity in November and December exerted considerable disease pressure, however we generally came through smiling and the vines are now the picture of health. The crop levels are moderate, although increasing berry size on already large bunches is making crop estimation difficult; the grapes are in very good condition and showing very promising flavour development. Sugar levels have jumped a little quickly in recent days, due to the very warm Labour Day weekend. Therefore we feel the need to act quickly now, to preserve the grapes’ natural acidity and ensure that the 2008 wines show optimum balance and the fine flavours for which our wines are renowned. Watch this space – I’ll report back once the dust has settled!" Caledonia Australis Mount MacLeod 2005 Chardonnay "Highly Recommended" in Winewise December, 2007. "top-notch chardonnays at very agreeable prices. The Mount MacLeod reflects Martin Williams' artistic, adventurous, Burgundy-influenced wine making style."
